If you're looking for a wheel for tough applications, the Tormek #SB-250 Blackstone Silicon Wheel will do the job. It was developed for shaping and sharpening* very hard and exotic alloyed steels. The combination of abrasive hardness, shape, and grain size, is optimized to work efficiently at the Tormek system's low RPM. Its faster material removal is an advantage especially when shaping tools with a large bevel surface, where the grinding pressure is limited, for example, planer blades and woodturning skews.
The 220 grit size is the same as the Tormek Original Grindstone and can be altered to work like a 1000 grit stone with the Stone Grader SP-650 (#19183 - sold separately). Thanks to its sharp and relatively small grains, the Blackstone removes hard steel efficiently even at low grinding pressure. The Blackstone Silicon also offers exceptional wear resistance. It can even touch up tungsten carbide, where the tool already has an established shape. The wheel is 10" x 2".
*Shaping vs. Sharpening - A distinction should be made between the shaping and sharpening of a tool. When shaping you remove steel to achieve the shape and edge angle you want. When sharpening you just touch up an existing shape to renew the sharpness.
Tormek developed the SB-250 Blackstone Silicon grindstone to shape and sharpen tools made of high-speed steel and other exotic alloyed steel. The stone can also touch up tungsten carbide in tools that already have an established shape.
Designed to Remove Hard Steel Quickly
Thanks to its sharp and relatively small grains, the SB-250 Blackstone Silicon grindstone removes hard steel quickly and efficiently, even at low grinding pressure. This is especially an advantage when you're shaping tools with a large bevel surface, such as planer blades and woodturning skews. Note that the stone does not offer faster steel removal on ordinary carbon steel.
Optimized for Tormek Sharpening Systems
The SB-250 is designed to be used in Tormek's T-7 and SuperGrind 2000 sharpening systems, and its combination of abrasive hardness, shape, and grain size is well suited for these systems' low RPM.
